In our seventh year as part of the Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity program, Macomb County Habitat received $104,610 in funding to help build a new home in Clinton Township and rehab another in a location yet to be determined during the 2011 year. This is a portion of the $10.4 million commitment nationwide by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans to Habitat’s homebuilding program. This funding will make the construction of 164 additional homes in 33 states possible.

Macomb County Habitat for Humanity will have built 16 homes as part of that effort with Thrivent’s help by the end of 2011. Each grant has provided a portion of the cost of each home, with the remainder raised in the faith community and general public to complete each project. To raise awareness of their efforts in the community, Thrivent encourages that half of the volunteers for each home come from Lutheran congregations, and members of 37 different Lutheran churches have lent a hand so far.

“The Thrivent Builds partnership has helped Macomb Habitat increase the number of families served in our community,” said Cheryl Furtak, Executive Director of Macomb Habitat. “We are so grateful for Thrivent Financial’s support of our efforts to provide decent, affordable homes in partnership with families in need. Over the past 7 years, Thrivent Financial has provided nearly $1,000,000 to help fund 16 homes in our community.” That support made Thrivent a natural recipient of the first annual “Spirit Award” given at the affiliate’s Big Bash in December of 2010.

Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity is a multi-year, multi-million dollar partnership between Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Habitat for Humanity International. Thrivent Builds is designed to involve Thrivent members and Lutherans in helping provide a “hand up” to people who lack decent shelter, offering them a path to greater economic independence. Excluding government funding, Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity is Habitat's largest single source of funding, constructing nearly 2,500 homes in the U.S. and around the world since 2005.
